Major conflict:
Wang(the most prominent character)'s desire for wealth and status clashes with his respect for the earth, later come into conflict with his children, as they disregard his wishes.
Climax: the financial success of Wang
Themes: Man's relationship to the earth
destroy tradition values to become wealthy
the place of women in Chinese culture
Main characters: Wang Liu (the narrater, also known as the oldest son of the couple)
Wang Lung
O-lan (Wang lung's wife)
ideas of the re-write: 1. use Liu's tone to describe the story
2. develope the oppression of females in Chinese society
3. convey his own interpretation of his parents story
4. share the same setting with the original text but use different tone and languages
In this re-write, I am trying to develope deeper about the female character o-lan and plotting the original story.
some background information: When the novel first published, some Chinese critics of the book disapproved of Buck's portrayal of China since they think Buck was a foreigner with western perspective and not entitled to render judgements on Chinese ways, Although Buck won the Pulitzer prize of the year (1932), her work was quite controversial in China because she was of a different culture.
Some significant questions to answer in the re-write:
1. Are the conflicts in the story all resolved? How?
2. Who were the women in the story who affected Wang Lung and O-lan?
3. The validity of using the city as a "bad" place and the country as a "good" place
4. How the title( The good earth) relates to the events of the novel ?
5. What is the symbolic importance of each of the following: Wang Lung's braid, the land, feet, the colors red and black, and water?
