My Final Rewrite + Commentary

Lord of the Rings (Rewrite)

It was a very sunny day, not a cloud to be seen in the sky, it was the perfect weather to throw Bilbo's 135th birthday party. Bilbo Baggins was a proud little hobbit who liked to keep to himself, did not care too much for company except for the few very close friends he held dear to his heart. Bilbo lived in the Shire, a small peaceful village for hobbits to live amongst themselves, with hobbit sized houses made from fine wood. Bilbo lived with his nephew Frodo, and the two were very close. On the morning of Bilbo's birthday Frodo sat out on the green grass steep hill over looking the road that led to the Shire, and everytime someone would appear to be coming, he would look eargly wondering whether it was the person he had been waiting on. After several times of disappointment Frodo was about to call it quits and head back home, when finally he heard the noise of a carriage approaching, and the familiar smell of a cetain weed that he knew his guest liked to smoke. Than when he saw the person sitting in the carriage, Frodo jolted up with excitement with a huge smile beaming from his face.
"You're late!"
"A wizard is neither early or late, he arrives precisely on time!" the old man in a grey pointy hat snapped back.
Than the two stared at each other with tense expressions, and after about 5 seconds of intense staring, the two broke in to laughter, and Frodo threw himself to the man sitting in the carriage for a big hug.

The man sitting in the carriage was a very famous wizard named Gandalf the grey, who was known for being both wise and powerful.
Gandalf was one of the few close friends Bilbo liked to have around for company, and one of the few people he would trust with his life. Bilbo and Gandalf knew each other from way back in the past, having encountered a major adventure together involving many dwarfes and one giant dragon. But that is another whole different story from the one being told now, so it will be left at that.

"Where is your uncle?" asked Gandalf.
"He'll be at home, he's trying to hide from all the relatives and friends, they've been trying to find him and wish him a happy birthday. You know what he's like.."
After having a brief catch up with young Frodo, Gandalf continued the road leading up to Bilbo's house. Gandalf arrived after a few more greetings of fellow hobbits, coming to a stop infront of a round green door just the right size for a hobbits height.
Knock knock, Gandalf knocked on the door with his long wooden staff. There was no reply. After waiting a moment Gandalf knocked again harder this time, and finally Bilbo replied.
"Sorry Im busy right now, no birthday wishes necessary thanks, please let me be."
Gandalf replied back "Im not here to wish you a happy birthday, Im hear to see a very old friend!"
Than recognising Gandalf's voice, Bilbo hurried to the door and opened it quickly.
"Hello dear old friend" Bilbo was very pleased to see Gandalf, for it had been a while since the two had last met. They gave each other a very big hug and immediately fell deep in to conversation. Talking about how they had been, and catching up on missed events in each other's life.

After enjoying his time at Bilbo's house for a good few hours with good food and good company, Gandalf had to leave as he received news that his superior wizard Saruman was looking for him. Saruman had sent him a message through a giant moth, requesting a meeting right away. Gandalf sincerely apologised to Bilbo for not being able to stay for the party, and promised him that he would come back for the party if the meeting finished early enough.

Gandalf took the carriage off his horse and decided to ride there on the horse itself, that way he could get there a lot faster. He knew it had to be something very important as Saruman had never summoned Gandalf this way before. Riding hard towards Isengard where Saruman's tower was located, Gandalf couldn't help but wonder what the reason was for his calling.
When Gandalf arrived he saw that Saruman was outside the gate waiting for him. Gandalf dismounted his horse and right away asked what the matter was.
"We have a major problem Gandalf, a reliable source has told me that the Elfs of Rivendale have recently had a council meeting with all the leaders taking place, and they have come to a very disturbing conclusion."
"And what  conclusion is that?" asked Gandalf.
"It seems that the resources have ran out in Rivendale to provide life for the Elfs, and they are looking to rage war to take over the other race's territories and their resources for themselves".
At first Gandalf could not believe his ears. The Elfs were known to be a peaceful and unthreatening race as they did not like violence, and were also know for their peace keeping. As they were always the ones that would try and stop any type of war from raging between the other races. But then a different thought came to Gandalf's mind, a thought that was in a way very obvious that he couldn't believe he had not thought of it before. The Elfs were a immortal race, they did not age nor die, it would only make sense that their resources would eventually come to a end.

Saruman and Gandalf walked together in to Saruman's tower, both thinking hard for the best solution to this major threat.
"Firstly I want you to visit lord Elrond in Rivendale, as I remember you are one of the few outsiders he trusts. It is your task to find out his plans. Then I would like you to visit the dwarf lord Gimli and the King of Gondor, both the dwarfs and the humans must be warned."
"I shall try my best Saruman" answered Gandalf, and in a quick moment he was back on his horse riding hard towards Rivendale.

At this stage Gandalf wasn't too concerned as he knew if the elfs were indeed planning to take over, he knew the combined strengths of both humans and dwarfs was going to be enough to fight the elfs off, though he did not wish it would get to that.
After two hard days of riding Gandalf finally reached his destination, Rivendale.
When Gandalf arrived there were two elfs guarding the entrance with bow and arrows, they looked tense until they could make out that the visitor was Gandalf.
"Oh, hi Gandalf you hear to see lord Elrond?" asked one of the guards.
"I am indeed." replied Gandalf.
Then he entered the tower which lord Elrond was situated at.
Lord Elrond was the leader of the elf race being most wise and knowledgeable, he knew just about everything that went on in Middle Earth.
"Greetings old friend. What do I owe the pleasure of your suprise visit?" spoke Elrond coming down a long flight of steps.
Gandalf spoke directly about the matter at hand, and after a long hour of conversation he knew where Elrond stood. For the whole time Gandalf tried his best to persuade Elrond in to reconsidering his ludacris plans, but even after listening hard to everything Gandalf had to say, Elrond's mind was already made up.
"Gandalf can't you see why it is necessary for me to do this?"
"The dwarfes are both ignorant and arrogant, they do not care for anything but themselves."
"And the humans... they are corrupt and power hungry, their own greed and ambitions cloud their judgement"
"These are races we can do without, they are better off being under our control."
"They are like children that need guidance and leadership, they need someone to tell them right from wrong."
"I was sure you of all people would understand this.."
"You have seen it first hand, the damage these races can do to our land, you can not deny this."
"I can not let my people go hungry and homeless, while such lower class races live on"
It broke Gandalf's heart to hear these words coming out of Elrond's mouth, a once very wise and reliable friend he would look to for help and advice, had turned in to such savage and controlling character.
"Well, Im afraid I can not stand on your side while you do this Elrond" spoke Gandalf.
"Even though you make accurate points, the dwarfes and humans deserve to live with free will."
"Even if they do make mistakes and do wrong doings, it is their right to make those mistakes on their own and learn from them."
"Im sorry my old friend.. but I will not let you do this, and if I have to I will put a stop to it."
"I will be warning the other races of your plans and letting them know what waits a head of them."
"I regret to say our friendship ends here Elrond. I really do hope you come to your senses before you do anything you cannot take back."
Elrond looked offended but yet very confident.
"You can not stop me Gandalf, it makes no difference what you do now."
"I already have all the strength and forces I need to take out the entire dwarf and human race".
"It matters not whether you go warn them or not."
"It is too late."
Gandalf replied, "you know you can't conquer both the humans and the dwarfs, even if your army is the strongest in Middle Earth, when the humans and dwarfs combine forces they will be too much even for your great army. You know this Elrond."
Then a chilling and psychotic grin appeared on Elrond's face.
"This might be true, but you do not know what power I currently hold in my position".
Elrond ordered one of the guards to bring something, and when the guard came back he came back with a tiny little box in his hand, which he handed to Elrond. When Elrond opened the box, Gandalf was completely terrified. It was the ring of power, the one ring that was created to rule everything and everyone. A evil ring once created by the almighty Sauron, for his own evil purposes, which was to rule and take over Middle Earth and everyone in it.
"Where... where did you get this?" asked Gandalf trembling with fear.
"It is not important where nor how I got it."
"The only thing that matters is that it is in my position".
And that is when Gandalf came to understand that all hope was lost, as he knew the power of the ring and what it was capable of.

After months  and months of fighting lord Elrond, the leader of the elfs eventually got his way.
He had conquered both the dwarfs and humans with the power of the ring, and now all the land resources belonged to him.
Gandalf fought bravely along side his fellow humans and dwarfs, but in the end had no choice but to go in to hiding and take refuge with few of his loved ones, who included five hobbits Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Mary, Pin, and two humans Aragorn, Boromeir, and a elf who knew well enough not to take part in Elrond's diabolical plan, and lastly one dwarf by the name of Gimli. And together they were taking refuge fighting off any evil elfs who they met along the way, and refused to give in to Elrond and his new by laws that he had created for everyone living in Middle Earth.
Slowly the each language was fading and replaced with elvish, as Elrond forced his language on all the races, they all had to learn it and speak it. After a while no one spoke the language of dwarvish nor english, the elvish language came to be the first language for everyone living in Middle Earth. Everyone was to live by the rules set out by Elrond, and anybody who did otherwise was to be severly punished and sentenced. In the end Elrond used power to overcome innocent beings and force his ways and  ideas on to them. All the resources and land were now owned by Elrond.

But there were still quite a few beings like Gandalf and his group of companions who wouldn't accept the new conditions set by Elrond, who chose to rebell and go in to refuge and keep their own beliefs alive and intact. There will always be some that do not accept the changes who choose to live as outsiders. Because no matter what, on my opinion, you can never really take away someone's free will away from them.

The End..

Commentary

I chose to do a rewrite of the classic story of Lord of the Rings, written by the famous J R R Tolkien.
In the original story it is the evil Sauron and his army of orcs and globlins who try take over Middle Earth. Having tried once in the past and failing, because the evil Sauron is defeated but not for good, as his evil survives with the ring, and making the mistake of not destroying the ring when having the chance to, the king of the human race keeps it for himself, ultimately destroying him the ring becomes lost and comes to the hands of a new owner. In the original story the heros Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Gandalf, and Frodo and his fellow hobbits prevent the evil lord Sauron from being resurrected and taking over Middle Earth. But I have rewritten the story so that the evil of the ring fulfills its goal and purpose of taking over the world, except it is not in the hands of Sauron, but in the hands of Elrond the leader of the elfs, who happnes to be a good character in the original story. The reason I have chosen to do this is because in the original stories I could sense that Elrond, in a way thought of himself and the elfs to be superior than the other races. As dialogues like "The dwarfes are both ignorant and arrogant, they do not care for anything but themselves." and "And the humans... they are corrupt and power hungry" are form the actual original story. Post colonialism shows a form of greater power, taking over the weak, by force for their own gain. This is the idea that my rewrite is based off. The human race and dwarf race having to learn the elvish language and live by the laws created by Elrond, which he forces on to them with the power of the ring. Also Elrond gains all the resources and land for himself and his race.
