To make a good re-write, I have thought a lot and I fanally got a
novel from a collection of short stories that deal with colonial period of Korea
from 1910 to 1945. In 1924, the novel was written by Jin-Kun Hyun, a Korean novelist.
The novel’s title is ‘a lucky day’ and the novel treats a story about an
ordinary family that is under the control of the colonization by Japan, and it
tells us about their daily life at that time. Also, the novel reflects how many
Koreans suffered under Japan through the life of the ordinary family, and it
mirrors how seriously many Koreans lived under repression by Japan and why they
could not say their piece. Before I start to re-write the novel, I think there
is no English version of it, so I am going to give you a brief story of it.
In 1924, when Korea was totally dominated
by Japan, there was a family that represents pain of all Korean family. Here is
four main characters called Mr. Kim, Kim’s wife, their baby, and Kim’s friend.
There is a man who called ‘Mr. Kim’ and pulls
a rickshaw. It is his only job and it was not suitable to have a stable income.
Right now, all he can do is to just pull a rickshaw. Yes… the man cannot make
money a lot. Because of the influence of the colonization by Japan, it is
really hard for all head of household in Korea to get a job and make money.
Most Koreans are abandoned into icy ground by Japan except for some Koreans who
support the nation ‘Japan’. To make things worse, he has a sick wife and a
newborn baby, but Kim cannot support living expenses at all because pulling a
rickshaw cannot make him earn money. He makes money about only five dollars per
day. Because he cannot give his family something to eat, his wife goes wrong
more and more. One day in pouring rain. His wife particularly stops him from
going out to make money, but he shakes her hand off violently. He makes more
money than usual, perhaps from the pouring rain, so he meets his friend in an
inn and drinks a raw rice wine with him, and he pays for the wine. He thinks
today is so lucky day. But, after a while, he is oppressed with his sick wife
and baby. So he buys a bowl of stock soup of bone and stew meat because his
wife has longed to eat a bowl of the soup for a long time. He has a spring to
his step because he is hooked on the idea of giving the gift to her. However,
he get home, and he witness his dead wife and his baby who sucks at his dead
mother’s breast…
This novel reflects all Korean families
that suffered from hunger and living. The title of the novel is ironic because
it was not truly a lucky day to him. In addition, the novel has an omniscient
narrator, so I will re-write the novel through Kim’s viewpoint because I think
he is the perfect man to express a person who is in a pressure cooker and it is
appropriate to show colonial theory by using the character.

Sounds really interesting! I don't know anything about Korean history so will be interested to learning more about it. Sounds very traumatic, I will be interested to see what style of writing you use. The baby sucking on his dead wife sounds like a very evocative image. Cant wait to see what you do with it!
ReplyDeleteHi Ju Sang,
ReplyDeleteThis story is so sad!! Like Rachel I know very little about the history between Korea and Japan. It's sad to know that this happened in real life. Even when he thought it was his lucky day it ended up being his worst. Does the story go on further than Kim finding his wife and baby?
The only thing I suggest is when you write out your rewrite is getting someone to proof read and check for some minor errors.
Looking forward to reading your work!! Good luck.
