Idea of rewriting

Enforced sex slaves(comfort women)

I will rewrite cartoon. That cartoon is about comfort woman. When Korean had colonial period from japan, japan soldiers brought Korean young girl (14~18 years old). Japanese said to Korean young girl if you come to japan, we will find a job for u. at that time, japan colonized Korea, so all most Korean was poor. Korean young girls went to japan, but Japanese government organized group of enforced sex slaves. Many Korean young girls everyday sexed with Japanese soldiers. Comfort woman said she sexed everyday more than 20 people. During World War II, around 200,000 Korean women were forced to serve the Japanese army as comfort women. So many surviving comfort women have suffered permanent injury from disease, psychological trauma, or social ostracism.

Nowadays, every Wednesday ex-comfort women have been demonstration outside of the Japanese embassy in downtown Seoul for years in hopes that one day the Japanese government would publicly apologize for its atrocities. But Japanese government doesn’t apologize to Korea until now. One of the comfort women died today.. [11.08.2013]

I said I will rewrite Korean cartoon. I wanna watch to u guys, but it is Korean.. it take a long time to translate.. Its content is same as I told upside. This cartoon’s view point is grandson of ex-comfort women. But I will change to grandmother. She is ex-comfort women.

First section: there is demonstration in front of Japanese embassy in Korea. The grandmother, sun –ok lee also take part in this demonstration every week. Her age is 87. After demonstration, sun-ok lee is going to home, at that time, some student ask to her what she doing is.
Second section:  sun-ok lee talk to student. This part is past view of sun-ok lee When she went to japan for comfort women.

Third section: that student also is starting to takes part in Wednesday demonstration. But at third time she goes, sun-ok lee didn’t come demonstration
Last section: that student heard sun-ok lee died because of her age. The funeral hall is last place of this story.

(YouTube) when u watch these, u can understand detailedly.

  1. Hi Sooji,
This sounds like a great idea to me.
I think you should put up the YouTube link, if you have one, of the cartoon. Even if some of us cannot understand Korean we can still view the images. Don't worry about translating it.
Thank you for the 2 links above, they were very informative. It's interesting the way art and literature have become an important means of expressing this story.
I like the monument in front of the embassy.
Could you explain how the narrative will 'change' when shifting from the grandson's point of view, to the grandmother herself?
    Esther:)
